Hundreds of bombs that rained down on Sutton and Cheam during the Second World War have been put on the map.
From 1940 to 1944 the Nazi war machine fired 434 bombs on Sutton and Cheam.
After the war Fred Darbyshire, from the municipal borough’s Engineers Department, created bomb maps and an occurrence book based on the records kept by air raid wardens.
The date and time of each explosion has been recorded along with details of exactly where it hit and what type of bomb it was.
Now Sutton Council’s Local Studies and Archives Centre has put the bomb sites onto a Google map so that they can be viewed by history buffs all over the world.
Councillor Jill Whitehead, chair of Sutton’s environment and neighbourhoods committee said: "This has been a massive undertaking by archive staff and volunteers and the results are quite breathtaking.
"Our libraries are at the very heart of our communities and staff are always working to improve the service we offer. This is an example of that continuing effort."
The digitising of the maps demonstrates the sheer volume of bombs to land in the borough.
