There is plenty of parking available in Sutton town centre according to the council - despite the closure of a well-used car park.

Sutton Council closed the multi-storey car park in Brighton Road last month meaning regular users have been forced to make alternative arrangements.

Although there have complaints from some drivers, Sutton council said there is still spare capacity in the town centre's other car parks despite the loss of the spaces when the car park closed on September 30.

Councillor Jill Whitehead, chairwoman of the council's environment and neighbourhoods committee, said: "We studied parking capacity and usage very carefully before we made the decision to close Brighton Road and were confident there was sufficient space available. We are pleased that it has started well and will continue to monitor the situation.

"We realise, of course, that it has been inconvenient for some drivers and we are grateful for their willingness to change their routines."

The council said it has not experienced extra demand for on-street parking as a result of the closure or seen queues of traffic trying to get into other car parks causing unusual traffic flows.

Coun Whitehead added:"We are not complacent and council parking staff will continue to monitor the impact in the coming weeks and months, but thus far we are very pleased with how the closure has been managed."

The Brighton Road car park has been sold to deep sea engineering company Subsea 7, which plans to demolish it to build a new head office on the site.
