Rush-hour tram service in Croydon town centre ground to a halt this afternoon after an ambulance blocked the track.

In a tweet posted just after 5pm, Transport for London warned commuters there was no service between Reeves Corner and East Croydon due to the obstruction at George Street.

A TfL spokesman confirmed the vehicle blocking the line was an ambulance attending a call out.

A London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 4.12pm on Wednesday, October 5 to reports of a person fallen on George Street, Croydon.

"We sent an ambulance crew and took a patient to a south London hospital."

Tram service in the town centre had resumed at 5.30pm, the TfL spokesman said, although there were still minor delays on the network.
