The Liberal Democrats have held the Wallington South seat after Steve Cook was elected at a by-election held on Thursday, June 11.
The election was called following the death of the Liberal Democrat deputy leader Councillor Colin Hall.
Coun Cook took the seat with 1,251 votes, a fall of 342 from the 1,593 his predecessor achieved in the 2014 count.
Tom Brake, Carshalton and Wallington MP, said: "Steve Cook’s track record as a community campaigner successfully taking on the likes of McDonald's will make him a formidable new councillor for Wallington South.
"It is reassuring that our positive campaign, which focused on what the Lib Dems have done and will do for people in Sutton, was welcomed by residents.”
Tim Crowley, leader of the Conservative opposition on Sutton Council, said his group had continued its resurgence "by halving the Liberal Democrats majority".
He said: "This shows the talk of a Lib Dem fightback was nonsense as borne out by the numbers.
"To have halved the Lib Dem vote in their safest ward with only a three-week campaign was a great achievement and a testament to the hard work of Jim Simms and his team."
