The identity of a man who was hit by a train and killed at Surbiton station has finally been revealed - two and a half months after he died.
The inquest into the death of Peter Roberts, 38, was opened yesterday after his DNA was successfully matched with items from his flat.
Mr Roberts, of Crescent Court, Surbiton, died on October 27 when he was hit by a train travelling through Surbiton station at 80 mph.
He is believed to have recently been laid off from his job as a security guard and was seen walking “purposefully” on to the tracks on the evening of his death.
His inquest had been delayed until yesterday because no one had come forward to report him missing and formally identify him.
Coroners were preparing to release a photograph of a distinctive tattoo on his abdomen, in a last-ditch attempt to get someone to recognise him.
The revelation comes after police received a tip off from a neighbour that he was missing and raided his flat on New Year’s Day.
Officers found a stash of weapons, an imitation hand grenade and drugs. Neighbours in his block of flats were evacuated for several hours.
