Boris bikes could be wheeled out to Kingston if London’s Conservative mayor is relected for a second term.
The pledge was broadly welcomed by cyclists, rail passengers and councillors, which could come into effect if Boris Johnson is relected in May, but some expressed doubt over its actual implementation.
A spokesman for Boris Johnson's re-election team said: "Boris Johnson’s cycle hire scheme is one of the world’s most successful and naturally he is keen to build on that success.
"But he is also absolutely committed to careful stewardship of the city’s finances meaning that any expansion has to be at the right price for the area.
"That is why, if re-elected, he has pledged to work with relevant boroughs and explore opportunities to expand the scheme where we can into town centres, with Kingston a key target."
Jon Frey, Chairman of Kingston cyclists, supported the plans but expressed concern on where the docking station would be installed.
He said: "Anything that encourages people to leave their cars at home and take a bike we would welcome.
"It would be interesting to see how it works because Kingston is quite a long way from other docking points, perhaps Wimbledon and Richmond would be nearest.
"Kingston council say there is no space for cycle parking so it will be interesting to see where they install them."
However Lib Dem Councillor Simon James, who looks after green transport in Kingston, raised concerns on whether the mayor would deliver the scheme.
He said: "That is right up there with the re-zoning pledge he made last time in Kingston and Surbiton. If you look at the manifesto from last time round he has delivered almost none of the things he promised to Kingston.
"I work in central London and use them all the time and they are a very convenient, eco friendly and good for your health but my trust in Boris to deliver is limited."
A spokesman for Kingston council said they did not expect an extension of the cycle hire scheme "in the near future".
He said: "We are aware that the Mayor of London plans to extend his bike hire scheme to more outer lying parts of the capital, however we have not discussed an extension to Kingston with either his office or TfL."
