A former Kingston mayor could be honoured for her life-long dedication to sport at the fifth Pro-active London Awards.

Eileen Gray CBE, 92, from Surbiton, has been shortlisted for the Outstanding Contribution to Sport award which she could collect at a celebratory ceremony taking place at the Oval on Friday, April 27.

Mrs Gray pioneered women’s cycling in Britain and even founded the Women’s Cycling Racing Association before being elected as the president of the British Cycling Federation.

She also served her community as president of Sport Kingston and chaired the London Youth Games Board for more than 30 years.

The sport-loving pensioner first began to take cycling seriously during World War II.

She said: “It’s nice to be appreciated. It’s very unexpected though – I haven’t even got the date in my diary. I will have to get up earlier than normal.”

Last year Mrs Gray found out she had been chosen as a local torchbearer and would be carrying the London 2012 flame through Kingston.

At the time she had said: "I must say, it was a bit of a shock. I think for 92 I’m doing extremely well."
