Police are investigating a suspected arson attack on a day centre for the elderly.
Firefighters said the were then called to the Cheam Priory Day Centre, off Priory Crescent, Cheam, to a drainpipe that had been set on fire.
The fire had spread to the building's roof, but firefighters said they were able to contain the fire to a few square metres.
A firefighter who attended the scene said within minutes the fire could have got out of control.
Firefighters were earlier called to Tudor Drive, North Cheam, at about 10pm to a van on fire.
The front passenger area of the van was on fire.
Firefighters said police had been informed and the causes of both fires were under investigation.
