Young Muslims have raised money for a Merton charity by running, walking and cycling 50km.

Member of the Colliers Wood branch of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) joined fifteen hundred others to take part in the AMYA Charity Challenge in Milton Keynes on April 28.

The group have spent months collecting in supermarkets and getting sponsors to raise money for several charities including the Asian Elderly Group of Merton - a charity that supports elederly residents in Merton.

The charity challenge is an annual event which local members of the AMYA have been taking part in since 1985.

This year the event took place at the Willem Lake in Milton Keynes and included a 40km bikathon and 10km walk and run.

Sajid Zahid, AMYA Colliers Wood Youth leader said: ''We were delighted to take part in the Charity Challenge and continue supporting some great UK causes.

"It gives us particular pleasure and drive to be supporting such a fantastic local charity.

"Given the recent tragic events in Boston, this is also an opportunity for us as Muslims to demonstrate that true Muslims are passionate about protecting life and not harming it.''
