Thousands revelled in the jubilee spirit this weekend as dozens of street parties took place across the borough.
Not even the rain could stop party goers from stringing out the bunting and firing up the barbecue to celebrate the Queen’s 60 year reign as communities gathered to share in four days of festivities. On Saturday, Mitcham played host to an Elizabeth to Elizabeth themed carnival in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The free event featured performances by local community and youth groups of dancing, singing and gymnastics, as well as a horse stunt jousting team, Knights of the Damned.
Maureen Dabney, 79, from Morden, whose grandson Charlie Shakespeare compered the event, said: "The martial arts and the Knights of the Damned display was very good.
"I can’t really fault any of it.
"Luckily we didn’t have any rain."
Councillor David Williams, Mayor of Merton, added: "The "Elizabeth to Elizabeth" theme gave a special flavour to this event, and we welcomed residents from all over the borough to this fun family day out."
Rounding off a weekend of celebrations, a jubilee beacon was lit at Morden Park on Monday, June 4 to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee along with 4,000 others across the UK.
