Furzedown Festival kicks off this weekend with a variety of fun events, music, historic walks and comedy set to keep you busy for the next fortnight.
It all begins at noon on Saturday with a festival community funday that will include football competition, circus skills workshops, salsa demonstrations, amazing African acrobats and a cake baking competition.
From 4pm visitors will be treated to live music from the stage including the South London Concert Band, 17-year-old Sherika Sherard who recently wowed audiences at the Jazz Cafe, Streatham Voices, Furzedown-based jazz blues singer-songwriter Trevor John, rock and blues sensation Butch and Femme from Graveney School and alternative, indie, psychedelic rockers The Henry Road.
On Sunday, Helen Long of the Streatham Society will be telling the intriguing stories of the history and architecture of Furzedown and Streatham Park in a free history walk, while there will also be a free mela at Franciscan Primary School.
Other highlights this week include an open garden at 208 Crowborough Road on Wednesday evening with a live performance from the South London Children’s Guitar Orchestra.
Next Thursday, Dan Atkinson will be providing the laughs at The Laughter Room Comedy Club alongside Marcel Lucont, Luke Toulson and Rich Wilson.
There is also an evening of blues, folk, musical poetry and cheeky jazz at St Boniface Social Club in Mitcham Road next Friday from 8pm.
The mostly acoustic gig will feature Simon Prager and Kevin Stenson, Little Machine, Tricity Vogue and lead singer with the Space Virgins Margo Random.
