Duke's Headliners Comedy Club in Putney has been going along quite quietly for the last 18 months so we thought it was about time we had a catch up to find out exactly what the club was all about. Neil D'Souza answers Graham Moody's questions.

Graham Moody: The club is relatively new isn't it?

Neil D'Souza: Yes, we started it in April 2008. Both Justin Brett and I are local boys (Neil Grainger came along later). I've lived in Putney since 1997 and Justin in Fulham since 1066AD, having moved up from Hastings during the troubles, and we felt Putney needed a laugh. As we are both actors who often play comic roles we wanted to start doing stand up ourselves and it seemed like the natural development.

GM: Is there space for another comedy night in Putney what with The Comedy Tree?

NDS: There's always space for more comedy in Putney. Have you been at the train station recently? Even the London Lite distributors look depressed. Plus our club is on a Wednesday night so we don't really compete with the Comedy Tree, which do Thursdays and Saturdays. See, that's how much room for comedy there is - we even plug our competitors. Our night also has a very different vibe - theirs is in the basement of the Walkabout, "low down and dirty", ours is in the Duke's Head VIP room, "high up and dirty." The comedy is often risque, but being at the Duke's Head makes it seem civilised.

GM: The venue is quite iconic isn't it?

NDS: It is a Putney landmark. Forever associated with the Boat Race it sits on the river, being big, white, beautiful and posh-looking. It looks posh, but has a great inclusive atmosphere that can get pretty thumping at times. I think Noel Gallagher got pretty happy in there one night. As far as I know he might still be in there.

GM: What sort of acts have had in the past?

NDS: Past highlights include Lee Mack, Richard Herring, Scott Capurro, Matt Kirschen, Hal Cruttenden, John Gordillo, Patrick Monahan, Henning Wehn and Paul Foot - all guys who have sell-out shows in Edinburgh and appear on the likes of Mock The Week etc, on the telly and everything.

GM: What about upcoming acts?

NDS: This Autumn we have a wealth of comic brilliance on offer with Lucy Porter, Holly Walsh, Issy Suttie, Normal Lovett (Red Dwarf), Trevor Lock, rising star Robert White, plus Edinburgh favourites Anil Desai and Matt Green. Anil is actually on this Wednesday with his improvised sketch show 52 cards and 52 famous faces in 52 minutes, he's a great comedy actor and impressionist.

Anil Desai, Jessica Pidsley, Sally Tatum, Paul T Ayres, Neil Grainger and Rich Wilson, The Duke’s Head, Lower Richmond Road, Putney, September 23, 7.45pm, £7. Call 07966 176 049 or visit dukesheadliners.com.
