To say Arthur Smith has had a multi-faceted career would be something of an understatement.
He is a playwright, a professional Grumpy Old Man and, of course, a stand-up comedian, but it is his time as a Leonard Cohen impersonator that should stand him in good stead for an appearance at Kingsmeadow Live on Saturday night.
He has been performing his show, Arthur Smith sings Leonard Cohen, on and off since 2000 and he may well have to call on some of the Canadian singers best known hits to keep pace with the group who will be joining him in an unlikely double-bill.
A set of Smith's stand-up will be followed by a performance from Rolling Stones tribute band the Rolling Clones and the comedian reveals he might be inspired to display his musical side on Saturday.
“Maybe I'll do my own Rolling Stones tribute or some of my Leonard Cohen songs,” says Smith.
“Occasionally when I do my shows I'll drag out them out. I'm not much of singer but then again neither was he.”
Fans of Smith's comedy will not be disappointed, however, as he is also certain to pepper his set with plenty of his trademark one liners and acerbic anecdotes - although he admits he is yet to choose which ones.
“I'll tell some jokes, not do any dancing and entertain the good people of Kingston,” he says. “I haven't really thought about exactly what I will do yet. I might tell some showbiz anecdotes and some sporting ones - that would seem appropriate.”
The chance to see Smith at the home of AFC Wimbledon will give comedy fans the chance to witness a true circuit legend up close – an opportunity that doesn't come around as often as it used to these days.
“I don't do the circuit so much any more,” he says. “I've paid my dues on that but I still go around the country. I've got a raft of material going back years to use if I wish and I do quite often.
“There is stuff I'm always sure I will use during the course of the evening but I'm still happy to ad-lib a little. I come from a background of theatricality so I also never mind putting on a cheap wig.”
