With New Art Club bringing its new show, This Is Now, to Croydon Clocktower next Wednesday, GRAHAM MOODY went to Soho Theatre to check it out and could barely stop laughing.

New Art Club's Tom Roden and Pete Shenton have been described as the Reeves and Mortimer of contemporary dance and I can see why after spending the majority of their new show holding my sides in.

This is Now is a homage to the very first Now That's What I Call Music CD release from 1983, which Tom illegally taped and then found in a drawer two years ago.

From the moment Tom came in to the room I was gripped as he began talking about his own life and what the tape meant to him through a series of deadpan jokes.

This forms the basis for the next hour as the pair take the audience on a journey fusing comedy and dance in a way I never thought possible.

Songs such as Heaven 17's Temptation, Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart, Duran Duran's Is There Something I Should Know and even Men Without Hats' Safety Dance all make an appearance with Tom and Pete bounding all over the stage.

There are improvised moments as well and the interaction with the crowd is superb, with one particular sequence involving childhood friends certain to have your belly aching.

One of the funniest things I have seen in a long time.

This Is Now, Croydon Clocktower, Katharine Street, March 10, 7.30pm, £10. Call 020 8253 1030 or visit croydonclocktower.org.uk.
