Colourful Surbiton-based artist Robin Rutherford launches his first ever solo exhibition at the cornerHOUSE on Saturday. GRAHAM MOODY caught up with the 54-year-old to talk about his style, getting selected for the Saatchi Gallery and Sex & The City.

Graham Moody: So tell us about the At The Speed of Light exhibition.

Robin Rutherford: "It's a representation of all the different styles and prints that I do, including painting, drawing and photography. A lot of my work is quite colourful. I try to evoke feelings and emotions through the styles of prints and most people see different things in them. It's mainly acrylic but I also have a few mixed media pieces using glitter, gold leaf and foil, anything to give a bit of a bounce to the piece.

GM: This is your first solo exhibition isn't it?

RR: Yes, I've done a few exhibitions with other people before but this is my first completely solo one and that's exciting. I have also got a piece going up at the Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham as part of an exhibition and one of my pieces has been accepted by the Saatchi Gallery which was excellent news and very exciting.

GM: How long have you been painting for?

RR: Seriously for about a year but I have always enjoyed expressing myself. Before that I was in graphic design and had been doing bits and pieces for quite some time but that was mainly for my own amusement and it wasn't serious. With the times as they were I decided to give it a go seriously and saw a few opportunities in the area. Having something accepted by the Saatchi Gallery means I must be doing something right.

GM: Is the photography on a similar theme?

RR: It is yes and I have done a few celebrity pictures too. I was in New York for the making of Sex & The City and got quite a lot of the actors making the film. They are different to what you usually see though, as it's all the actors with crowds around them watching them shoot the scene.

GM: Have you always lived in Kingston?

RR: No, I was born in Nottingham and only moved down here just over a year ago - it was part of a major life change. I like it down here though, it's warmer and there are parakeets.
