Wandsworth Artists' Open House is giving the public a unique chance to engage with artists in their working environment this weekend, writes Amelia Jones.

The event, organised by Wandsworth arts team in conjunction with an artists' steering committee, is already in its eighth year and will see venues open for two days this weekend and next weekend.

Last year's Open House attracted about 8,000 visitors to more than 200 venues across the borough.

This year the event looks set to be bigger than ever with participating artists including the BP Travel award-winner Isobel Peachy and established artists such as Margaret Knott and sculptor Gilbert Wyman all taking the exciting opportunity of showcasing and selling their work from the comfort of their home or studio.

"It’s absolutely fascinating to see these talented individuals at work and to learn more about the different skills and techniques involved in their trades," says the council's executive member for leisure and culture, Councillor Sarah McDermott.

The event embraces a variety of mediums including craft, design, sculpture, painting, jewellery, photography, drawing, film and installation, with many visitors buying their first piece of original artwork at an Open House and then returning year after year.

The map of open houses, which is available online or in libraries, allows visitors the freedom to decide their own route and stop off for a coffee or bite to eat along the way.
