Jazz singer Aydenne Simone brings her deep rich tones to Wimbledon Studio on Friday week for one night only.

The 48-year-old has performed all over the world including a three-month residency at the five-star Shangri-la hotel in Singapore, and promises a night filled with the fantastic sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles and Sarah Vaughan alongside some original blues material.

“It was an amazing experience as you'd expect in somewhere it costs £500 for a plate of dinner," she says of her hotel residency.

“The audience were all top draw. We had Royalty and the likes coming through."

Simone is passionate about jazz, having fell in love with the sound at age seven because her father, who was a professional jazz musician, played the music all over the house.

“Jazz is about being told a story with warmth in an inoffensive manner," she adds.

"It has a way of grabbing people and takes you to a period that many weren't a part of.

"It's about passion and you can tell the people that play it, live and breathe it.

“I found my voice lent itself to this style as I have a contralto tone which is very deep.

"But Jazz is challenging and you never know where the music is going to take you.”

It's impossible to believe, but Simone originally worked as a session singer for dance and house music tracks.

She says: “The money was good but my heart wasn't in it. Once I got handed a page with just a single line of music to sing which would then be remixed and cut up.

"I just thought this is not music, it's got no soul.

“Even though I had to walk away music is about honesty and once I turned to jazz I would feel six foot above the ground when I'd see how an audience could be affected by it.”

Simone and her band Jazz Culture have been together for eight years and if you're lucky on the night you'll get a new appreciation for a certain diet coke ad and some improvisation about a place not readily mentioned in jazz - our very own Wimbledon.
