Sutton Acoustic Music Club returns with a vengeance this week with a new venue but the same tried and trusted sound as they take music lovers on a laid-back journey through the folkier side of life.

Having bounced from home-to-home over the years since springing to life way back in the 80s, the Club now looks to settle in at their new digs, Sutton United’s ground on Gander Green Lane.

And for committee man Mike Hartes, who also doubles up as a member of ‘house band’ Acoustic Astronauts, it is the perfect time to be kicking back into gear.

He reveals: “We have not had much luck over the years and hopefully that will all change at Gander Green Lane.

“We started out at the Robin Hood pub but they lost their music licence, then we were at the King’s Head in Merton and that closed to be knocked down and become a bus station, so we could do with a break!

“The original reason for putting the club together was that there was a group of us that had nowhere to go and play music, so we had to set up our own night and that is still the aim now.

“As we got more popular we were able to pay for more established acts to come along, and we hope to do that again at our new home.”

Hippy Joe Hymas and Jolene Missing will headline the opening night, with a healthy slate of folk, americana and celtic vibes on the menu.

And Hartes admits they will have to work to rebuild their audience.

He adds: “We have been leafletting and emailing to try and get a big crowd for the first night and we are hoping to get close to a hundred people.

“Hopefully things will improve from there, as the more people we get to come along the more money we can put up to put on a great night, but whoever we have there it is guaranteed to be good fun.”
