Wimbledon Symphony Orchestra’s concert in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief at St Paul’s Church on Saturday promises to be a special occasion for one local family, writes Micahel Archer.
Centrepiece of the programme will be a violin concerto by the American composer, Samuel Barber, performed by Israeli-born Ofer Falk – teacher at the Trinity and Guildhall schools of music and leader of the Allegri String Quartet.
Leading the cello section of the WSO will be his mother-in-law, Rosalind Gonley.
Gonley’s husband Raphael is also a cellist in the WSO, although not in this concert.
Falk is married to the youngest of their three daughters, Stephanie, and their eldest daughter, Rebecca, has just passed grade one violin with a distinction.
All being well, Stephanie and Rebecca will be at St Paul’s – with Grandpa Raphael – to hear Dad and Grandma playing together.
The rest of the programme consists of Brahms’ Tragic Overture and Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony, all conducted by Robin Browning.
