Sam Duckworth, aka Get Cape. Wear Cape, Fly, spent his formative years as a musician on the Kingston circuit and with his self-titled third album about to be released the politically conscious singer-songwriter is returning to the Royal Borough to play a Banquet Records-New Slang double header. Will Gore caught up with him...
Are you looking forward to playing in Kingston once again?
I can’t wait. Of all the music scenes in the country, particularly the ones that are outside the cities, it is the best. The guys that run Banquet Records have always been really good to me and whenever I have played at The Peel, The Fighting Cocks or New Slang it has always been great.
How important was Banquet Records in the early days?
To be honest I can’t imagine how life would have been without it. Banquet was the first place that stocked my EP and they allowed to do some instores. When we weren’t sure if the first single would do well they put a lot of energy into getting behind it. There are countless bands around the country owe as much as I do to that shop.
What are the Banquet instores like to play?
Banquet really has that independent record shop feel where the guys that run it know the names of the regulars who come in and what they are in to, so when you do an instore there is a mass of people who know each other and it makes for a welcoming and fun atmosphere. The first time we did a show there 20-25 people showed up, but the next time we did it we walked into the shop and couldn’t believe how many people were there.
Will it be all new tunes at the Kingston gigs or can we expect to hear some old favourites?
There has been four-and-a-half years since my first album came out so I like to take time and energy to focus on the more recent songs, but it is nice to shake up the setlist and have a few new arrangements of older songs peppered in there too.
Is it a nervous time when you are introducing new material to the fans?
As much as you can rehearse and put songs on the internet you can never know how they will feel live. We’ve just done a small tour and that was definitely nerve-wracking. I wanted to see how the new songs worked out live - it’s about letting them loose and I’ve been pleased with how they have been going down.
