When Christine and Lea Papin murdered their employer's wife and daughter in 1933, little did anyone know what a massive case it would become.
Over the last 70 years the sequence of events that led to the sisters bashing in the heads of Madame Lancelin and her daughter and gouging their eyes out have been examined in many a film and play, the latest being Wendy Kesselman's My Sister In This House, taking place at Acquire Arts in Battersea this month.
The pair had been working as maids for Monsieur Rene Lancelin in Le Mans for seven years by the time they committed the crime, for which Christine was sentenced to life imprisonment and Lea served eight years.
Directed by Zoe Lafferty, Kesselman's version revolves around the strange relationships of the four lonely women in the house and explores the desperation of unfilled hopes and the cruelty, jealousy and manipulation which can manifest from love.
The play stars EastEnders actress Robyn Moore, who played bookie Shirley Benson in the soap from 2003 to 2004, alongside young actresses Lucy Bruegger, Rachel Clare and Lara Dorée.
Acquire Arts, 155 Battersea Park Road, August 4-8, 11-15 and 18-20, 8pm, £8. Call 020 7228 2629 acquirearts.org.
