Do It Yourself theatre is coming to Croydon Clocktower this month with the epic Odyssey presented in a never-before seen way.

Inspired by teach-yourself-to-dance floor mats, Odyssey Steps will see vinyl foot and hand prints act as instructions throughout the Clocktower taking you on a journey complete with monsters, battles and shipwrecks.

"It doesn't make much sense unless you get stuck into it," says company director James Yarker.

"You turn up at the Clocktower and find the place decorated, with a set of vinyl red footprints among the decorations.

"They are of Odysseus the hero of the piece and if you follow them it takes you through his journey with clues representing what happens on that journey popping up throughout.

"The key thing is that people get stuck in instead of standing to the side.

"If you put your feet in the footprints and your hands in the hand holds it should all come together, that's why we call it a Do It Yourself performance."

The interactive event is suitable for all ages and is the fifth such performance the company has done.

"It was inspired by the Do It Yourself floormats that teach you how to do the fox trot etc," says James.

"Being a theatre company I thought that was interesting and wondered if you could do a theatre show using that same device.

"Different people enjoy it in different ways.

"Really young kids just enjoy charging around with the feet in the footprints while the older participants get the fun of figuring out what is going on.

"Greek scholars hopefully enjoy it in another light altogether."
