Gorgeous secretaries, lecherous executives, pinging typewriters and corporate shenanigans will be the order of the day when the Epsom Light Opera Company present their latest show at the Epsom Playhouse.
How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is a comedic romp through the world of a 1960s-set office, documenting the treacherous climb to power of ‘Ponty’ Finch.
Written by Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin of Guys and Dolls fame the musical was a popular success when first performed in 1961, although it is less well-known in this era.
And for star Gerry Birch, who plays one of the aforementioned secretaries, that was part of the attraction.
She reveals: “We always like to do something that is a bit different.
“It is ideal for our company as there are lots of differing parts - and good parts.
“We like to dip in and out of eras in our choices and the 60s is always fun to do.”
Set at the offices of the World-Wide Wicket Company, Finch originally joins as a mere window cleaner but using his charm on the ladies and his quick-thinking with company bosses finds himself on an unlikely march to the summit.
With fast action, unstoppable music and a hilarious plot it seems likely to raise the Playhouse roof, and Birch reckons audiences will be on to a winner.
She adds: “It is a lot of fun, with loads of singing and dancing.
“It is very lively and really good family entertainment.
“Rehearsals have been great and I am sure that will translate to the stage.”
