My Fifteen Minutes, running at the New Wimbledon Studio from March 17-20, asks how ordinary people, their principles, and their relationships are affected by the prospect of becoming famous.

Directed by Natascha Metherell, this musical follows two girls, both of whom have their hearts set on celebrity, as they become aware of the gap between their dreams and the realities of the world they want to enter.

The play’s writer, Simon Beyer, invites his audience to “watch the fireworks” as the characters find themselves in competition for a space on the red carpet – a space which perhaps neither of them deserves.

He says: “We wanted to challenge the notion of what fame’s all about and explore the difference between fame and success. There are a lot of people that want to be famous, but who lack the desire or the talent to be successful. So we are probing the edges: What is fame? What is success? And why do people pursue it?

“It’s something you see on reality TV a lot – groups go up in front of the judges and perform as friends, and then certain members are criticised. The other members have to make a decision between friendship and their own careers.”

As part of the Fresh Ideas season, which marks the New Wimbledon Theatre’s centenary year, audience members will be invited to give feedback immediately after the performance.

Beyer welcomes these contributions: “Often with audiences the only feedback or criticism you receive is the level of applause. More in-depth commentary allows you to look at the piece objectively and to find a balance between what works and what doesn’t.”

The writer, who has worked on over 50 productions at venues ranging from London’s fringe theatre circuit to the West End, is determined that this run is only the beginning for My Fifteen Minutes.

He adds: “We aim to showcase the musical, to make sure it is of a high enough quality for a mainstream audience, by that I mean a West End audience.”
