First of all, let's get one thing very clear - there is no actual porn in Porn the Musical.

So if you're only reading this because you thought you might get a cheap thrill you can close the paper now and go back to surfing the internet for whatever it is that floats your boat - but for those of you interested in a rather funny and, well, rather different piece of theatre, read on.

Porn the Musical was written by Malcom Galea two years ago and follows the story of Maltese man Stefan, who ups sticks from his native country and moves to America, where he unwittingly gets himself involved in the porn industry and a film run by Marvin Scorsleesy.

"It's a comedy and that's the most important thing to say," says director Paul Robinson, who is joint artistic director at Theatre503 where the musical is running for three weeks from Tuesday.

"That may be its title and that's to some extent shocking but actually it's not about porn it's about relationships that people have who happen to work in porn.

"We have been very clear that this is much closer to Monty Python than Mounting Pythons or whatever the terrible porn equivalent would be.

"There are some rude words and obviously it's an excuse for some really cheap gags but it's important people will come expecting fun.

"The music, performed by a live band on stage, is absolutely right up there with Avenue Q or Spamalot or anything that has come out recently in this guise and is really clever stuff.

"Chris and Boris manage to come up with really catchy tunes that are quite complex in their structure so what you get is something catchy but interesting as well."

The musical is a different direction for 503, which Robinson admits has become known as the home of more serious pieces over the years.

"503 made its name as a heavyweight new writing theatre and at times that was great and at times the place suffered from being over worthy," he says.

"When Tim and I joined three and a half years ago we were very definite in terms of the policy that we wanted to approach things but there's not a hell of a lot of fun plays out there.

"I was in Edinburgh last year and saw a version of this show and the music for it was just so much fun and it came to me at a time when I was going through a degree of life change.

"I was becoming known as a director who does really serious heavy material and I totally didn't start my directing journey in that way, it's just sort of what happens to you.

"I suppose it's a tremendously huge reaction to that."
