Next week The Rose Theatre will be stepping back into the 1940s as the Fitzrovia Radio Hour arrives in Kingston for two performances.
A cast of four, suitably dressed in vintage attire and speaking in the most refined of accents, perform a recording of a fictional radio show that comprises a series of parodic stories, such as The Man Who Was Ten Minutes Late and The Four Minute Mystery!, interspersed with adverts for fanciful products (Carbolic soap, anyone?), with the madness being soundtracked by a host of sound effects expertly created by the company using an all manner of props, from cabbages to desk fans.
The show has struck a chord with theatregoers and comedy fans playing to packed houses in London throughout the last two years and it has also recently completed a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival.
One of the performers, Tom Mallaburn, believes the show’s ability to appeal to arrange of people has been the key to its success.
He says: “It appeals to lots of different people for different reasons - ever since we started doing it the audience has been made up of different types of people, ages and backgrounds all having a great time.
“You get older members of the audience viewing it as a piece of fun nostalgia and you get younger people laughing at the dated attitudes and performance style of the time. We seem to have really captured people’s imaginations.”
So if you are tired of stand-up comedians complaining about the pitfalls of modern life, grab your tickets for Fitzrovia Radio Hour and settle back for an hour (and a half) of good, old fashioned fun.
