Actor Joshua McGuire, who plays Simon Bliss in Rose Theatre's new in-house production of Noël Coward's Hay Fever, gives us a behind the scenes look at the month leading up to last Thursday's opening night.

The first day of rehearsals is always nerve-racking. You realise that these people are the ones who will be playing your mum and dad, your sister, even your lover! Thankfully the whole cast is great, and with Celia leading us, there's absolutely nothing to worry about. The first read through is always exciting – when you hear the characters voices out loud. It's so great to just dive in and not worry about any pre-conceived ideas one might have about the characters, and to just let loose. Thankfully there was laughter, so all seems to be good so far.

We're up on our feet, not setting anything in concrete, but just playing around with furniture, props and bits of costume. The rehearsal room is so well equipped, and over the next few days more and more bits of furniture and props will arrive, which all help to give an idea of the set - we've already had a peek at a model of it. The design is fantastic. Perfectly suited to the slap-dash Bliss family!

The third week of rehearsal is always a tricky one. The lines are just settling in, the moves are still fresh in your mind, and the character is taking shape. However, it can be a week of huge frustration. You're familiar, but not familiar enough with your character to really let loose and have fun. Over time, however, you find your stride, and eventually, you begin to have fun!

The first preview – it's always so interesting to finally get an audience for a play – especially a comedy. Moments that we never imagined to be funny get the biggest laughs, which gives you massive confidence for the rest of the run. A play never truly comes alive until there’s an audience, who'll let you know exactly what they think. Thankfully, in our case, the response has been wonderful.
Hay Fever, Rose Theatre, High Street, until October 23, 7.30pm (Thurs and Sat matinees 2.30pm), £8 to £30. Call 0871 230 155 or visit rosetheatrekingston.org.
