Mystified Chessington residents woke up to freshly-painted double-yellow lines, painted around their cars, on Saturday morning.

A leaflet from councillors to residents said the lines were unenforceable and residents could park on them.

The letter, on behalf of Lib Dem councillors Margaret Thompson and Alan Dean, said: "Double yellow lines can only be painted when a traffic management order has been consulted with residents and agreed by your local councillors.

"There has been no traffic management order for Mount Road; there has been no consultation and the local councillors knew nothing about it.

"There has clearly been a mistake, but we cannot get to the bottom of it until normal office hours next week.

"In the meantime, the double yellow lines are not valid.

"We will also be complaining on your behalf about the work being carried out very late at night.

"That is clearly unacceptable."

Resident Peter Jones said: "This end of the road is a cul de sac where there is no logical reason at all to have yellow lines.

"There was no notice or consultation what so ever, they just turned up and painted the lines.

"Some residents don't have drives so if they want to have a dropped kerb they will have to pay over £1500 to Kingston Council."

Lee Garrett said on Facebook: "The fact that they painted between the cars and the time of night tells me it may have been a disgruntled employee getting their own back.

"The whole thing is a shambles. I'd love to know the whole story."

And Andrea Tucker said: “As it's not been approved by the council, I would imagine it's down to the contractors and maybe they should make all those who were there last night walk up and down the length of Mount Road with a toothbrush and a tin of black paint”.

Conservative councillor Andrew Day said: “None of the councillors in Chessington North knew anything about it and that is the point we need to put across.

“We are all trying to find out as soon as possible what is going on because no traffic order was issued, as far as we understand.”
