Your correspondent Jeff Stonard questions what shops there are in Tolworth at present?
Well, Iceland, Marks & Spencer and Budgens for a start. A local butcher and greengrocer, a hardware shop, pharmacies including Boots, a computer store and a flower shop, as well as many others.
Yes there are many food establishments - many takeaways seemingly underused but also good Chinese, Greek and Thai sitdown restaurants and a few local cafs well-used by the local population.
The one thing all the shops have in common is that Tesco is likely to sell all the products they do and the centre of gravity of the Broadway is likely to move to the other side of the A3 roundabout. A lovely new bridge will deliver people who walk straight past the shops in the Broadway and deliver them to the front door of the Tesco, which is just as well because the extra traffic will bring the roads to a standstill.
How many people are likely to park at Tesco and walk across the bridge to the Broadway? I would suggest very few indeed.
