Having always been a supporter of local shops I was delighted to find in my special greengrocer, The Country Harvest, in Carshalton High Street, a lovely selection of English apples to celebrate the apple festival season.
Peter, the owner, and his ever helpful assistants had at least eight different varieties of English apples with their name and a pocket history of the apple and its origin.
I found this such a rewarding experience that I decided to pass this information on to the Scout Group, 1st Wallington where I am involved, as part of our programme about healthy eating which is ongoing at the moment.
Most of the children were not aware of the different types of apples, only that apples were either red or yellow, so hopefully this will be an introduction to them encouraging their parents to buy British and to use local shops for a greater and fresher selection.
