Recently, I wrote to Golfrate Property Management to express my sadness at the closing of the Kendrake Chilren's Bookshop.

As this event was featured in the Sutton Guardian, and as there are many other people who feel the same way, I wondered if the theme of my letter might be of some interest to you.

We have used this bookshop for many years. It was not only efficient and focused but a good place to be, with a delightful staff who knew what they were about. The ethos of the business was reminiscent of the recent past where personal interaction was priority - the butchers and bakers, the greengrocers and hardware shops and many others. Today we go for big and impersonal' but with happy shareholders.

This could be a motorway, in one direction, to one big hive with many casualties along the way - but what does this matter as long as there are financial profits for some?

Forget personal satisfaction and community, let's go business management and global'. Incidentally, do we ever consider just what financial profit' really represents?
