I am delighted residents like Donald Roy take recycling seriously (letters, October 26).

However, he is being rather unfair to the council, especially since two rolls of recycling bags were left at his flat on September 26.

Similarly, 30 packs of recycling rolls were delivered to Putney Library on September 15, and another 10 on September 29.

This being said, we do know that the library has run out on rare occasions, and we have put in place checks to stop this happening.

Residents receive sack deliveries on a three-monthly cycle.

The problem with premises with multiple occupants is not that we do not deliver, but that because of the nature of these properties, we have to leave sacks in communal areas where any resident can take them.

This does occasionally mean the sacks do not get to the resident who has requested them, if other people pick them up first.

The message is that residents should not take more than they are likely to use before the next delivery to make sure that their neighbours can get their fair share as well.

Wandsworth is at the forefront of coping with the problems caused by growing volumes of waste.

Through the Western Riverside Waste Authority we have supported campaigns to reduce waste production and promoted the building of a new incinerator in Belvedere.

We are also involved in the development of an exciting new technology, pyrolysis, to destroy waste at the point where it arises.

However, we will also need to increase recycling rates and are working alongside environmentally aware residents like Mr Roy, to make sure we reduce the amount of rubbish dumped in landfill to a minimum.
