My husband and I have lived at our address for about 30 years, and manage very well with old fashioned dustbins. They sit in our front garden, fitting neatly behind the wall. All our rubbish goes in there, inside a black bin liner, then we replace the lid.
On a Friday morning, after I have tied the top of the bag, the dustman lifts the bin liner from the bins, and we start all over again.
I think most of the rubbish which floats around the streets is caused by people just dumping bags full of rubbish outside their property.
These are then open to birds, foxes, cats, dogs etc. A lot of what I have read in favour of wheelie bins being tidy will still be subject to people needing to lift their rubbish into these bins, which some won't, or won't be able to, do. So I feel you will be back to square one.
