When Britain was urged to join the Common Market (as it then was) we were assured that all we were joining was a trading bloc.
Today, the European Union costs us a staggering £4.7billion pounds each year and interferes in all aspects of our day-to-day lives.
The latest piece of insanity to come from Brussels is a proposed ruling that we will all have to keep our car headlights on during the day - even in broad daylight.
Both the Government and motoring organisations say this will actually increase the number of deaths on Britain's roads. Additionally, according to the Government's own estimates, it will add three per cent to everyone's fuel bill. Essentially, this is a three per cent stealth tax' imposed by Brussels. So much for reducing pollution and protecting the environment.
Needless to say, our Government says it can do nothing to halt this measure. The transport minister, Dr Stephen Ladyman, simply wrings his hands and says he is "increasingly pessimistic" about stopping the new law.
Further information on this important subject can be found at the website SwitchOffThe.EU where there is also a petition for people to protest against this EU diktat.
Directives from Brussels have been the cause of decline in many aspects of our daily lives. How the politicians have kept the facts from us until we have lost the power to govern ourselves is one of the most scandalous and shameful episodes in our history.
