The Conservative project to have A2 build 400 houses in Stanwell is presented as all about affordability and improvement.

Who could possibly object to such a noble aim, proof that honest Daves' new Conservative are all heart.

Well, a large number of residents, for a start.

Fears of overcrowding, loss of open space and general distrust of Tory intentions prevail.

They suspect council tax boosting is the agenda.

If the Tory prospectus is honest, selling will be tough indeed.

A couple with young children or intending to start a family will not be best pleased to note that a primary school in Stanwell is to close and that the others are full.

Elderly people will be dismayed that their only day centre is to be knocked down - by A2 as it happens.

For the time being, Stanwell's Youth Club thrives, a plus for teenagers.

But will it survive a Conservative election success next May - twenty pence per year will be saved if it is shut.

By this time next year Stanwell could be an urban desert, with not one social amenity for its people.

Easier, as they say, to sell sand in the Sahara than A2 houses to incomers who study the outlook.

Consultation with present residents will be no problem. You hold it, then ignore the outcome.
