By Councillor Philip Jones
Contrary to your headline (February 7), the Cricketers pub has not been ‘finally saved from the bulldozers’.
To quote the inspector who upheld Merton Council’s refusal of its demolition, the building is "architecturally undistinguished", and there are three other pubs on Mitcham Cricket Green.
We will allow it to go, however, only when we’re offered a replacement building whose design and scale are suitable for this conspicuous site in a historic conservation area, and which respects the Vestry Hall and fire station next door.
We have now turned down three unsatisfactory schemes and each time won the subsequent appeal, and we hope the site owners will at last get the message.
Coun Jones (Labour) is chairman of Merton Council's planning applications committee and represents Ravensbury ward in Mitcham.
