A 12-year-old girl hit by a car yesterday was at a pelican crossing outside her school.

The girl was rushed to hospital with head injuries after being knocked down outside Blenheim High School in Longmead Road, Epsom, at home time.

Headteacher Tracey Fantham said she spoke with the mother this morning who reported her daughter is doing well in hospital.

Police have just confirmed that she has now been released from hospital.

Ms Fantham said: "We are obviously relieved and our thoughts are with  thoughts are with our student and her Mum and Dad.

"She has a cut to her head and serious bruising."

The school's first aid and leadership teams leapt into action yesterday after a silver Vauxhall Corsa hit the Year 8 student at 3.30pm.

Ms Fantham said they were grateful to a nurse who got out of her car to help before ambulances arrived and took the girl to St George's Hospital in Tooting.

She said: "We were all very shocked as a school and we quickly dealt with the situation to ensure everyone was safe and it was kept under control. She was conscious but obviously in pain."

Ms Fantham said a leadership team member was always around the pelican crossing area at home time and children had been reminded to travel home safely.

She said she may contact police about concerns that cars travel along the road very fast.

Longmead Road was closed for two and half hours yesterday as ambulances attended the scene and police investigated the incident.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene and has been questioned by police.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or the events leading up to it should call Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference P13043159.
