The latest yarnbombing stunt by the Woolly Coven of Carshalton appears to have been stolen overnight.

The group of knitters, now renowned for producing knit graffiti to coincide with public events, hung a large wool heart over the doorway of the British Heart Foundation furniture shop on Woodcote Road, Wallington.

Within hours of them doing so on Sunday night, the hearts went missing, presumed to have been stolen.

A member of staff arrived on the scene at about on Monday morning (February 11), but there was no sign of the Valentines Day gift.

The Woolly Coven, whose identity still remains a mystery, has appealed for its return as it was designed to make money for the charity.

A spokesman for the Coven, Wanda the Witch, said: "Obviously the people of Wallington aren't as appreciative as the Carshalton populous. I reckon it was stolen overnight."

Sam Andrew, the branch manager, said it was heartbreaking.

She said: "I didn't even get chance to see it for real. I have seen the pictures and it looks incredibly impressive and I want to thank them. I can't believe people went to all that effort for us and someone stole it. It's very un-heart like."

The Coven spent hours preparing the piece ahead of Valentines Day with the idea that people took the woollen hearts to sell on and donate the money to the British Heart Foundation.

Last year, the Woolly Coven of Carshalton celebrated the Queen's Jubilee by knitting 60 ducks for Carshalton Bridge, followed by a giant swan for the Olympic torch relay and then finally pumpkins for Halloween at the Honeywood Museum.
