I was absolutely furious at the council quote in your story about funding cuts to voluntary groups, stating "Merton Council … is cutting funding to voluntary groups deemed to be not contributing to helping keep the elderly in their homes for longer."

Two organisations which have seen their funding slashed are Age UK Merton and Merton and Morden Guild, both of whom offer a fantastic range of services to do precisely that.

Age UK Merton, alongside its long-established day centre, allows more than 100 housebound people weekly to enjoy socialising with lunch and activities, often providing much-needed relief to regular carers and the home care service.

It also offers home handyperson, gardening and footcare services, works with local health services to reduce falls and help people with depression, stress and anxiety and provides a wide range of activities to keep older people active and engaged.

It is difficult to see how we could be "deemed to be not contributing".

Both these organisations operate with skeleton staff and a large team of volunteers, with all their resources dedicated to helping older Merton residents.

It is bad enough to see funding slashed without seeing such misleading statements being bandied about.
