Carole Mauger; Mitcham
Having read the 'One Stop Shop' article in the Wimbledon Guardian I am delighted by the proposals to regenerate Mitcham town centre.
I am also pleased to see that so many people support these innovative proposals that will bring life back to our town centre.
The recent questionnaire asked "what would make you visit Mitcham Town Centre more often?" and over 1100 people wanted more shops.
In answer to the question, "Would you support the introduction of a bus lane through the Fair Green and London Road?" more than 1000 people (71 per cent) said 'yes' and 60 per cent of business owners also said 'yes'.
Over the last 20 years so, many Mitcham shops have closed.
We have lost a butchers shop, a fishmonger, a gas showroom, an electrical shop and Mr Robb the jewellers shop.
The town centre is now supported by barber shops, takeaways, charity shops and betting shops - four of which are directly facing the Fair Green.
In order for the town centre to thrive and have a balanced economy, we need to have greater variety of choice thus eliminating the need to make visits to Wimbledon, Croydon and Sutton to find goods that are not available in Mitcham.
I look forward, at last, to the hope of a prosperous future for Mitcham.
