It is tremendously good news (Archive Service to move in to gallery, February 6) that the worst fears of all of us who really do 'Love Croydon' and especially its artistic and historic heritage are not to be realised.
The Local Studies and Archives Service is to continue and as a bonus the public will have greatly enhanced access to the Borough's very fine Art Collection.
Croydon Council's Cabinet members propose, alongside saving money, a development of the Local Studies and Archives Service in enlarged accommodation with increased opening hours and incorporating a rotating selection of works from the Art Collection of some 2,500 drawings and paintings.
Coun Tim Pollard and the relevant Council officers are to be congratulated on this positive investment in our town's cultural heritage, a fine example of joined-up thinking.
The contrast with the proposed fate of Newcastle-upon-Tyne's proposals is stark. Newcastle was declared a city in 1882. Croydon's far-sighted decision will make our town more eligible for city status and more lovable.
