I refer to Carole Mauger’s letter relating to the proposed introduction of an additional bus lane through the pedestrian area of the Fair Green.

As a local resident who, from the age of maturity, has witnessed some seventy years of planning and traffic manipulation in and around the Fair Green area, I and many other local people most strongly object to the proposal.

We have had this in the past. Why on earth should we be wasting our money on this nonsense?

The town is perfectly suitable as it is, it just needs tidying up.

The existing bus stops are within reasonable reach of the various shops. Creating another bus lane will not generate any more business for local shops; the area is well served by the existing public transport.

Your correspondent talks of the loss of butchers, fishmongers, and other businesses from the town: we now have Tesco, Iceland, Lidl, Asda, Farm Foods, and Morrisons - all selling most of the goods that people want.

We also have Costcutters, Boots, Superdrug, Peacocks, Gregg’s, together with all the other multicultural butchers, fishmongers, general grocers, greengrocers, and cleaners. 

If there is a real need and a profit to be made from a shop in the town area, then rest assured that someone will open it, without the provision of a bus lane.

The market space is a complete shambles, no visible control appears to be exercised over the stallholders regarding their encroachment on the seated area and vans parked around the various stalls.

While the market is in existence, there is no inducement to open a shop in competition.

I am hopeful our money will be wisely spent by just enhancing the existing pedestrian spaces and maintaining the grassed areas.
