Gas-grabbing thieves have prompted a warning from police in Weston Green.

Surrey Police have received three reports in the past week of thefts from cars in the area, after a spate of fuel thefts from vehicles in Thames Ditton, Weston Green, West Molesey and East Molesey at the end of last year.

Elmbridge Neighbourhood Inspector David Hollingsworth said: “As fuel becomes more expensive it becomes more attractive to thieves and we urge all vehicle owners to take extra precautions to secure their vehicles, especially if they hold a large amount of fuel.

“There are a number of methods that offenders use to steal fuel from vehicles but one relatively easy way to prevent this type of offence is by fitting good lockable fuel caps and anti-siphon devices.

“It’s certainly worth doing as there is not only the loss of the fuel but the delay to the journey and the delivery of the goods involved to be considered.

“These measures can definitely reduce your chances of becoming a victim of this type of crime.”

Officers are investigating the offences but were concerned the offenders would continue or move elsewhere, having discovered an easy source of income.

Inspector Hollingsworth said officers were reviewing CCTV footage and neighbourhood officers would increase patrols in the area place and visit victims to provide additional support and crime prevention advice.

Anyone who sees anyone acting in a suspicious manner near to a vehicle and suspects they are committing a crime should contact Surrey Police immediately.
