A woman has died after being hit by a car in an early morning crash in Purley that left four other people hospitalised.
The accident happened just after 4am, when a red Citroen Saxo struck two pedestrians on Godstone Road.
One of the pedestrians, believed to be a 40-year-old woman, died at the scene. The other pedestrian, a man, was taken to hospital with a shoulder injury.
Three people travelling in the car, two men and a women, were all taken to hospital with minor injuries.
A Met Police spokesman said: "Police were called at approx 4.05am on Saturday, February 16 to reports of a car that had left the road and collided with two pedestrians in Godstone Road, near the junction with St James Road, Purley.
"Officers and London Ambulance Service attended the scene and discovered a woman, one of the pedestrians who is believed aged 40, suffering injuries - she was pronounced dead at the scene at 4.58am.
"Officers from the road death investigation unit will investigate."
Road closures remain in place on Godstone Road between Downs Court Road and the Whyteleafe Hill roundabout.
A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
