One of the oldest Women’s Institutes in the area gathered to celebrate their 94th year last week.

Members of Morden’s WI gathered on Tuesday to mark the occasion with tea, cakes and entertainment and are keen to make clear they "don’t make jam anymore." 

Celebrating 94 years, Sue Allworthy, a committee member, said: "What we do in our meetings is have speakers come in and talk to us about all sorts of things, we go out for lunches and have a party every February and we go into London.

"We have garden parties and have people who come in and give us talk and demonstrations and we have a craft fair.

"The most important thing is it gives friendships to people.

"A lot of our ladies are widows and they form tremendously good friendships at the WI."

The Morden branch of the WI was founded in 1919 when Morden was a small rural village, making it the oldest branch in the North Heathlands Surrey group of WI’s.

Anybody is welcome to attend the their meetings which are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 2pm at the Parish Hall of St Lawrence church in Central Road, Morden.
