Council tax bills are set to rise for the first time in ten years.

Plans are being put forward to increase bills by 22p a week from April on  Band D property, an increase in 3.1 per cent.

The council have said it is having to pass on increases from other public organisations who make up the bill, including refuse disposal by the Western Riverside Waste Authority.

Wandsworth will still have the lowest council tax in the country despite the proposals, with people living in a Band D bill last year paying £684 last year compared to the London average of £1,300.

The council also unveiled plans to reduce departments and directors from six to four in a major re-organisation of services.

Plans are in place to meet a spending reduction target of £80m by 2014, with the council having to make savings of £100m over five years.

Council leader Councillor Ravi Govindia said: "Once again we have been able to freeze our share of bills but we cannot absorb costs that are beyond our control and are levied by other statutory organisations."

Councillors will vote for the proposals at full council on March 6.
