The Labour Party has belatedly followed the lead of the Green Party in supporting the campaign for Twenty is Plenty in Croydon: Better late than never!
But Conservatives have so far resisted constituents’ wish for this simple measure to make our roads safer. When a large meeting of Coulsdon residents voted overwhelmingly for the 20mph limit in their own residential roads, the council ignored the vote.
Every week, an average of 57 people are killed on Britain’s roads and 350 are seriously injured. 30 per cent of the collisions involve pedestrians or cyclists. Speed does matter: At 30mph, 48 per cent of pedestrians in a collision are killed, at 20mph only 5 per cent. Slower speeds are not just safer for everyone but also mean less fuel and emissions improving our environment and reducing noise.
Nearly 90 boroughs (11 in London) have a local Twenty is Plenty campaign and 30 councils have introduced the limit for residential roads or plan to do so. Come on Croydon Council - its time to jump on this popular bandwagon.
