A 10-year-old boy came to the aid of the fire brigade after their engine got stuck in a narrow road while they were on their way to a fire.
A fire engine from Esher was sent to a shed fire in Spring Gardens, West Molesey, on Thursday, February 14 at 3.50pm.
As the crew went down the road for access, they realised it was too small due to cars parked and knew they would not be able to get through.
Unsure how around, Paul Crowther, blue watch manager at Esher fire station, said: “I looked out the front of the fire engine and saw two lads from St Albans School who looked agitated. I opened the window and one asked if we were going to the fire by his grandma’s house.”
The two St Albans pupils jumped into the fire engine and gave instructions to the firefighters about how to get to the address.
Once at the boy’s grandmother’s house, the firefighters were able to jump over the fence and attend to the fire. As a surprise to the boy, blue watch went to St Alban’s school on Friday for their assembly.
The firefighters told children about how they can help the fire service.
Firefighter Crowther said: “With the boys help we could then direct our second appliance to the scene.”
