Kingston's HMV store has survived a second wave of closures announced today (Wednesday).

Administrators Deloitte have confirmed a further 37 of the music retailer's stores will cease trading, along with the 66 outlets already marked for closure earlier this month.

The latest cull will cost 464 people their jobs.

However, the HMV store on the first floor of the Bentall Centre is not on the list.

Joint administrator Nick Edwards said the steps were necessary in order to keep HMV trading on the high street.

He said: "This step has been taken in order to enhance the prospects of the restructured business continuing as a going concern.

"Together with the previously identified 66 closures, this restructuring will result in a residual portfolio of some 116 stores.

"We are extremely grateful to the staff for their continued strong support and commitment during an understandably difficult period."

HMV entered administration in January, becoming one of the biggest high street brands to fall victim to the rise of online shopping.

Kingston has a historic relationship with the retailer, as it is also the final resting place of Nipper the dog, who appears on the company's iconic logo.

The fox terrier/jack russell cross is buried beneath the site now occupied by Lloyds Bank in Clarence Street.

An alleway next to the King's Tun pub was renamed Nipper Alley in honour of the dog in 2010.
