Pupils at Trinity School came second in the first UK Safe-Cracking Physics Tournament.
The year 12 pupils designed and built a safe rendered impregnable using physics principles, for which they came second overall.
The team were able to crack other team's safes, but their own-built around a James Bond theme, remained secure.
As a prize the team have won themselves a place and travel grant to take part in the international final held in Tel Aviv, Israel, in March.
